I received this song when my first child was a baby and have sung it to my children off-and-on since then. It’s not meant to imitate Native American songs, with the ‘heya’ parts- they’re just the sounds that I heard in between the lines when I received it, but I also recognize and acknowledge the similarities. I tried changing the line to “eya eya,’ to avoid misunderstanding, but finally ended up deciding to record it as I had originally received it, with all respect in my heart for native communities worldwide. Feel free to sing it however you are comfortable, and to make up verses about what you are grateful to be/grateful for: “I love being your student/ thank you for this teacher” “I love being your partner/ thank you for this love” etc.
